Roundtable
Effects of the Economic Downturn on Mexican Immigration to the United States
First Amendment Center, August 31, 5:00 p.m.

Conexión Américas is proud to partner with The Center for Latin American Studies at Vanderbilt, along with The Wilson Center, to host a roundtable discussion on the effects of the recent economic downturn on Mexican immigration to the United States.  The panel will bring together leading experts to analyze the interrelation of immigration, economic crisis, and increased border security- and what this means for Mexico as well as the US.  Featured will be Jorge Durand, who is a leading expert on Mexican immigration issues.  He is also a CLAS Visiting Resource Professor and the author of “Crossing the Border: Research from the Mexican Migration Project”.  Panelists include Vanderbilt faculty Katharine Donato (Sociology) and Gary Gerstle (History) as well as David R. Ayón (Wilson Institute) and our executive director, Renata Soto.

The event is free and open to the public and will begin at 5pm with a reception, with the roundtable to follow at 6pm.

Nonprofit collaborative seeks founding partners to help anchor community center in the heart of Nashville's international corridor

Nonprofit collaborative seeks founding partners to help anchor the South Nashville Community Center.  As Nashville welcomes more and more immigrants and refugees into our community, coordinated services are needed to address the complex and interlocking challenges facing these new arrivals as well as to help them maximize the opportunities our city affords them.  The South Nashville Community Center seeks strong partners committed to social, economic and civic integration for immigrants and refugees.  While South Nashville is home to a large number of immigrants and refugees and is increasingly recognized as our city's vibrant international district, a diverse population of hard-working Nashvillians has called South Nashville home for many generations. Therefore, this nonprofit collaborative also seeks partners committed to social justice who wish to strengthen their presence in one of Nashville's most diverse neighborhoods.

"Discussion of Mexican migration to the United States is often infused with ideological rhetoric, untested theories, and few facts. In Crossing the Border, editors Jorge Durand and Douglas Massey bring the clarity of scientific analysis to this hotly contested but under-researched topic. Leading immigration scholars use data from the Mexican Migration Project—the largest, most comprehensive, and reliable source of data on Mexican immigrants currently available—to answer such important questions as: Who are the people that migrate to the United States from Mexico? Why do they come? How effective is U.S. migration policy in meeting its objectives?"
